The Harmain high-speed railway, also known as the Western railway or Mecca–Medina high-speed railway, is a 453-kilometer (281-mile) high-speed rail route in Saudi Arabia. Harmain refers to the Islamic holy towns of Mecca and Medina. It uses 449.2 kilometers (279.1 miles) of mainline and a 3.75-kilometer (2.33-mile) branch connection to King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in Jeddah to connect the Muslim holy cities of Medina and Mecca via King Abdullah Economic City. The line is capable of reaching a high speed of 300 km/h (190 mph).

The project began in March 2009 and was officially launched on September 25, 2018, with the public opening on October 11, 2018.

The railway is expected to transport 60 million passengers each year, including 3-4 million Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, reducing traffic congestion on the roadways. It is not connected to the Mecca Metro system.

The first voyage to Madinah was inaugurated on March 31, 2021, and operations between Makkah and Madinah will restart after being postponed due to the COVID-19 epidemic on March 20, 2020.

There are five stations on the line at:

1. Medina Station (King Abdulaziz Street-East)

2. King Abdullah Economic City Station in Rabigh

3. King Abdulaziz International Airport – opened on 11 December 2019

4. Jeddah Station (Naseem) – Out of service

5. Mecca Station (Rusaiyfah)

The Makkah Central Station is in the Rusaiyfah District, near the Rusaiyfah park, and ride to the Grand Mosque, near the 3rd Ring Road. On Harmain Road in Al-Naseem District, the Jeddah Central Station is located. The railway alignment runs through the Harmain road’s median. There is a passenger station in Medina. In the new King Abdulaziz International Airport, a station with a branch line is being developed.

The stations, according to the Saudi Railways Organization, are “aesthetically iconic” structures with designs that reflect Islamic architectural traditions. Shops, restaurants, mosques, auto parking, a helipad, and VIP lounges will all be available. Buro Happold and Foster + Partners designed the stations.

Pilgrims and visitors to the Two Holy Mosques can now travel more easily thanks to the Harmain Railway.

The Harmain railway also provided Iftar lunches for travelers to eat before Maghrib prayer.

During Ramadan, the railway made 50 excursions per day and conveyed over 625,000 passengers.

The journey would travel through various stations, including Makkah and Madinah, as well as Jeddah Central Stations and King Abdullah Economic City.

Additionally, travelling through King Abdullah Economic City Station, from King Abdulaziz Airport railway station to Makkah, and from King Abdulaziz Airport to Madinah. The number of Harmain railway trips has increased by more than 35% in the last few months.

It’s worth noting that the Harmain trains have a total capacity of 14,595,000 people, with each train having a capacity of 417 passengers.

Furthermore, the Harmain trains are part of a proposal that includes 35 fast electric trains, with a capacity of 834 passengers per train during peak hours.

For example, based on average journeys between Makkah and Jeddah, the Harmain high-speed railway would convey 7 trips per hour, or 2,919 passengers in one direction between Makkah and Jeddah. The trains’ huge seating capacity also helps to meet predicted demand, particularly between Makkah and Jeddah.
